[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

bloodfromastone:

Johnny Cash does Bukowski’s “Mercy Seat” from Cash’s album “American III”

I’m guessing that the spoken parts at the beginning are Bukowski but this is a Nick Cave song. Words by Nick Cave. Music by Nick Cave and Mick Harvey. Vocals by Cash.

2011 Ebertfest T-shirts
this one commemorates a conversation Roger Ebert had with Charles Bukowski on the set of Barfly.
In other news, I had no idea Barfly was about Charles Bukowski. (and I’ve never seen the film either but I remember when it was out)
if the photo is not big enough, click through to enlarge.

“Wow, it’s Friday night, what are you going to do? Just sit there?” Well, yeah. Because there’s nothing out there. It’s stupidity. Stupid people mingling with stupid people. Let them stupidify themselves. “

Charles Bukowski

Let me just read this every Friday for the rest of my life to remind myself that I’m not missing much out there (at my age, anyway, certainly I can’t be missing much).

now it’s computers and more computers
and soon everybody will have one,
3-year-olds will have computers
and everybody will know everything
about everybody else
long before they meet them
and so they won’t want to meet them.
nobody will ever want to meet anybody
else ever again
and everybody will be
a recluse
like I am now.

—Charles Bukowski (via julene)

Pretty prophetic for someone who died in 1994.

Your life is your life, don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission. Be on the watch. There are ways out. There is a light somewhere. It may not be much light but it beats the darkness. Be on watch. The gods will offer you chances. Know them. Take them. You can’t beat death but you can beat death in life, sometimes. And the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be. Your life is your life. Know it while you have it. You are marvellous, the gods wait to delight in you.

It was true that I didn’t have much ambition, but there ought to be a place for people without ambition, I mean a better place than the one usually reserved. How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?

—Charles Bukowski, Factotum, 1975

(I haven’t actually read any Bukowski but apparently that will have to change.  I was actually looking for a different quote when I came across a few I relate to…)
