heh. I haven’t even posted today till now but the computer is going off for a while. I got up early, had coffee, had some yogurt & granola cereal, folded and put away all my damn sheets (I hate folding sheets like crazy. I need someone Shaq-sized to do it for me) then went to yoga. Stopped at the hardware store and picked up a spray bottle (so I can defunk my yoga mat with a tea-tree oil solution), potting soil, and a cheap mat for the kitchen. I think it’s a bath mat but whatever. It goes in front of the vent and the dog likes to sit there, whether or not the heat is on.

Came home, made a proper breakfast, green tea, ate and drank and read on the deck, then walked the dog.  Then put the junk mail from the floor into the recycling box. I did wash my dishes from today, or almost all of them. Other than that, I’ve watched the Phillies lose to the Red Sox, ate some chocolate, pistachios, and drank a beer.

I gotta get my ass up and do some 20/10s and unfuck some of the joint.

weekend list

I’m going to try to be as productive inside this weekend as I was outside last weekend.

But I have some errands to run and other stuff.

It would be nice to get out and whack some tennis balls tomorrow morning. I’ll try but I am not gonna hold my breath that that happens because I have to

  • *mow the lawn (best done in the morning)
  • get some potting soil (best to get errands done early)
  • *Sunday morning is yoga

Inside I am going to do some serious 20/10s going from room to room for some general unfucking.

  • *Living room: finish CDs, clean off and get rid of tv tray table, clean up trunk between chair & sofa, COFFFEEEEE TABLE, get rid of boxes
  • clean off landing, put away dog gate
  • *Hallway: put tub of winter clothes in attic, wash out humidifier
  • *bedroom: put away clothes, general straightening, vacuuming would be nice
  • *Kitchen: wash all dishes & put away, keep up on them rest of weekend. Clean off table, counters, clean floor.
  • Bathroom: floor, rugs, toilet
  • Laundry 2-3 loads (one in progress)

*priority

Next weekend of course is Memorial Day weekend, so I have an extra day to work or relax. I’m hoping to get enough done this weekend that next weekend I can have one lazy day. We shall see!

Holy crap peoples.
I’m tired, and sweaty and probably stinky and I earned this Yuengling like a motherfucker.
After I got back from the bank and hardware store I mowed my lawn (it’s a small yard but I have one of those manual reel mowers and my grass was long). Because it was not as early as I usually do it, it was almost full sun back there. It was in the high 70s today.
After that I brought out my outdoor table and then potted some flowers. Then I washed down the table, brought out the 2 chairs and washed them down.
Then I decided it was time to put the cushions on the front porch furniture for the neighbors’ kitties to enjoy.  So I pulled out the 4 cushions, brushed the dirt and cat hair off of them with a dry scrub brush, then I got a bucket of water & borax and scrubbed the mofos down. Of course as soon as I started the dog walked across the wet one and lay down on on of the dry ones but I hollered at him and he growled and moved. They were filthy, about 8 years of accumulated dirt and cat hair. After I scrubbed them I dumped some clean water on them to rinse and set them out to dry (see photo).
I also put out my 2 lawn flamingos. If you look closely to the photo you will see one by the garage.
Then I went out front to my car and put the new windshield wipers on.
Putting clean(ish) cushions on filthy dirty furniture is kind of dumb so I got my buckets out again and put some simple green in there with some water and scrubbed down a loveseat, 2 chairs, and a table. And the mailbox. AND MY FRONT DOOR. And rinsed it all.  And I swept the porch off too. I kept thinking, my god, you would think the President was stopping by. I wish. My front porch will probably never be this clean again.
Then I walked (scuzzy and all) down to the end of the next street over to the pizza place and got me a 6-pack of Yuengling and a Powerade.
I wrote a short list of stuff I was going to do and I did none of it I don’t think.
Last week I also pulled some weeds and trimmed my tree and cut down some errant trees that are growing in inconvenient places.
So the front of my house is looking decent.
So is the back!
I’m pooped. I’d take a hot bath but a shower is going to have to suffice because I’d have to clean the tub first and that is not happenning today.
I do think I will change my sheets this evening, and I will try to vacuum the downstairs.
Yoga will be much needed tomorrow morning so I better get my ass out of bed early enough to get there because I have Mother’s Day stuff after that to do with my mom & sister.

You know you’re a homeowner (and old) when stuff like this excites you.

My house was previously owned by a Drunken MacGyver who used to open a case of Bud and do home improvements (this is not even really an exaggeration from what the neighbors say).

They installed a washer and dryer, heating and a/c unit, a hot water heater, added a workbench, and made a little pee closet in the front of the house and then walled it in. (There was a pool table in the larger part of the basement, priorities, people!) The doorway they left measured about 29” across.  And the washer jutted well out into that space. I had to lift the laundry basket higher than the washer to squeeze through there.

It occurred to me last winter when I replaced my hot water heater that it would be a real bitch if I had to replace the washer and/or dryer, especially just the dryer, since the washer would have to be moved in order to get the dryer out of that space.  and the dryer, I should add is about 29” across as well.

I did replace the bilco door that leads outside from the basement and had the stairs redone so any basement appliances would not have to go through the house again, as the hot water heater did. (I live in a twin and everything is narrow, plus I have a lot of shit, it was a tight squeeze).

But anyway.  I had one of our company painters widen the doorway and I think my hideous dungeon of a Blair Witch basement looks like a thing of beauty right about now. I’m not even kidding.  I may actually clean it up a little and realize its potential a little, as a laundry room anyway.

hippie tea break

It’s nearing 1:30 and I haven’t been very productive around the house but I did get a few things out of the way:

  • Boxed up my Shoebuy return & dropped it off
  • cashed in my big $4 winner scratch off lottery ticket and got 2 more that were losers just like me (I shoulda bought a MegaMillions worth $356M)
  • went to the bank (realized I hadn’t deposited last week’s check…)
  • went to the grocery store
  • sorted out the hockey tickets, will pick them up tomorrow after haircut
  • got the word we are going ahead with The Decision For My Mom’s Fucking Party For Her 80th good lord give me strength

Once I am done with my tea it’s time to get on the stuff I didn’t get to yesterday:

  • put away clothes that were strewn all over, then on my bed, then in the basket, now back on my bed :-/
  • Put away clean and folded laundry (partly done)
  • dresser top and bookshelf (which doubles as my bedside table)
  • DUST ALL THE THINGS
  • maybe an hour, maybe a half hour in the attic (just trying to keep it realistic)
  • Clean off dining room table since I just really fucked it up today, emptying out some of the contents of my (in need of unfucking) purse. :-\
  • clean up kitchen after I am finished fucking it up.
  • ???

Sunday

  • haircut @ 11:30
  • pick up tix @ sister’s
  • clean bathroom floor and sink
  • load of laundry—wash, fold, put away
  • unfuck CD shelf
  • unfuck coffee table (my poor coffee table)
  • ???

It’s really frustrating because most of this stuff is just regular weekly household chores and I have MAJOR unfucking projects I need to get to.  But there is no sense in starting any of the heavier stuff if the lighter stuff is in the way.  I took yesterday off from work to try to get a jump on things and make a little headway but I guess I need to take more than one day off. Call me Sisyphus. :-(

up at 7!

Well a little after 7. To let the dog out. Then I went back to bed, read for a little while, and never got back to sleep due to open windows and water company equipment in front of my house digging up the road. (I’m not complaining, they have been quick about it and minimally intrusive…and they are on the other side of the street anyway, plus when I was walking my dog the other day one of the guys helped me with an escaped black lab that Elvis was trying to eat…my wingspan is only so long)

So now I am drinking coffee and soon I will make my breakfast (oooh the house is vibrating), clean up, make my bed (I forgot when I first got up!), and get started on The Unfuckening.  I may have to mow the lawn first. But that could hamper the rest of my day since my back is already sore from FIGHT/Haganah class last night. I’ll mow tomorrow.

I started reading Volume I of an Eleanor Roosevelt biography. It’s over 500 pages. Sooooo, I’ll probably get behind on my reading goal again. But I am ready for this, and if I read the 20-page introduction with interest (I hate long introductions!) then I think I shouldn’t get too stuck, not like the 3 months it took for me to read The Brothers Karamazov or Moby Dick (both of which I liked but were rather dry in spots).

Ugh….my whole house is an Invisible Corner. (Anyone who follows Unfuck Your Habitat knows what that means). But I am going to work on it this weekend, starting after breakfast which I will start making as soon as I post this sucka.

Also if you want to hear my accent meme, I posted it yesterday. I’ll be taking it down one of these days if I remember. Probably within the week.  Like anyone cares but whatever.

Okay, good breakfast and then UNFUCK FRIDAY!

today’s my friday!

And since I took tomorrow off from work to clean I have to devise a game plan to make the most of it.

  • Up by 9 (hopefully at least a half hour earlier but I’m trying to be realistic here)
  • MAKE BED
  • coffee/breakfast
  • minimal internetting
  • wash breakfast dishes
  • bring laundry to basement
  • throw in a load
  • 1 hour in attic (gotta pick a spot to unfuck)
  • I may have to sort some boxes for donations…
  • finish laundry/PUT AWAY/Put away stuff from *cough* weeks ago
  • unfuck bedroom flat surfaces—bookcase & dresser, including dusting
  • unfuck the rest of the bedroom (shouldn’t be too bad) including swiffering the floor and vacuuming
  • walk dog
  • eat some lunch at some point
  • take breaks throughout
  • shower
  • dog therapy at 5

If there is any extra time in there before 5 (knowing me there won’t be) or after dinner I’ll do 15 minute circuits (15 minutes doing anything productive in a room) depending on how much time and energy I have left, then I will spend the evening vegging in front of the tv or laptop watching movies or tv.

And making a Saturday plan.

Oh I may mow the lawn tomorrow too…But it has to be done one day this weekend.

I am taking Friday off to try to get a handle on some UNFUCKING OF MY HABITAT. To be continued over the weekend.

I can’t stand it anymore.  All the little unfuckings I did over the fall and winter are re-fucked. Maybe not as bad as they had been but it’s still pretty bad, considering all the stuff I never even got to. The only thing I’ve kept in order is the corner where I keep my coats, where I pulled up the rug.  And that’s good, I am proud of myself for that. The kitchen has been manageable too.  Oh and the bathroom. It’s dirty but it’s organized still.  So that is another plus.

I don’t know specifically what I will do on Friday, but over the course of the 3 days I think I will focus on:

  • Cleaning up my bedroom: I neglected the dresser tops last time so it’s high time I tackled that, and I really need to dust. Also, put away a lot of winter sweaters.
  • Clean the bathroom (which is mainly swiffering the floor and giving the sink a good cleaning, and a quick clean of the shower and terlet)
  • Clean the kitchen floor and straighten up
  • Couple loads of laundry—washed, dried, folded, PUT AWAY. Also, put away leftovers from the last 2 weeks or so. :-/ (I’ll do that tonight, actually, since I have no classes)
  • I might do some time in the attic. I might give myself an hour.

I usually do my own thing, but I think this time I’ll try the 20/10 and the 45/15 methods a little more strictly.

I think I will also sort boxes for donations and the next day I take off I will take them to wherever (or else I’ll go on Saturday if I can).

But since I can’t really take a vacation due to The Little Old Dog, I am taking days here and there, many of which will be spent Unfucking My Habitat! (I took one last week for fun, don’t worry)

TRY THIS AGAIN…I think a goddam windows update ate my other post….

As often happens, I start some cleaning in my house which needs so much work and turn it into a bit of a project.

I was just going to clean out this corner of my living room but once I wiped down the bench I decided to get rid of some more carpet.

I started removing the ugly red carpet in the living room and dining room years ago, like maybe 2008, and got the dining room done but left some around the perimeter of the living room, due to heavy furniture I couldn’t move and other factors. And of course once the carpet comes out, quarter round needs to go down to cover the gap between the baseboard and the floor. So it’s a job.

Anyway, I cleared off the bench, wiped it down, moved the step stool and recyclable bags, all the stuff under the bench, got rid of a load of phone books (I know, I know…) moved the bench and then pulled up the carpet, padding, and tack strips. Then pulled up the staples from the padding, vacuumed, and wiped the floor with a damp rag and wood soap. Actually took out the trash in the teal can that has been sitting there since the first time I removed the carpet, along with the newly removed carpet, padding, and tack strips. Put back what I wanted there, and now I have to do something with the stuff I took out of there. Oh and I put my roof rack bag for my car into the storage bench, which I’d discovered was empty this whole time.

Still have a long way to go on the living room, but it’s progress!

All this took me about an hour or so. Not bad.

But my god, I have such nice stuff, WHY IS IT HIDDEN BY ALL THIS CRAP?!!

For some reason I am horrendously tired. Part of it is because I was up and out of the house by 8:30 this morning, but I feel exhausted and sore like after a hard workout. I think I’ m sore from the other night when the dog tripped me and I caught myself before I killed either one of us or broke my face or neck. Strangely though I don’t feel that out of whack like I’d think I would, like I would need to visit the chiropractor. But I do feel something in the back of my right leg so I’m paying attention to that.

So…I didn’t get a whole lot done today around the house. I did get grocery shopping done so that’s good.

  • I got 2 loads of laundry done (not put away yet)
  • put away the Christmas gift wrap and bags in the attic (about time!)
  • put some more summery clothes into the tub in the hallway and put that in the attic
  • baking soda/vinegared the bathroom sink twice. I think the drain assembly just sucks and is slow. It’s almost always been like that.
  • made and froze some breakfast sandwiches

That’s about it. My hallway is *better* but not done. I have felt so tired I haven’t wanted to do anything, but I pushed myself to at least do laundry and pick up a few things here and there, wash some dishes, etc. I’m too sleepy to even watch a movie and once again I fell asleep after about 10 pages of The Trial. wtf is it about that book?  I don’t find it boring, it’s not that exciting but it’s easy to read but I keep dozing off no matter what time of the day I try to read, it seems.

I think I should just call it a night and hope I wake up refreshed and energized to get some stuff done. like—-

  • put together a beef stew in the crockpot
  • straighten up the back BR
  • LR: coffee table and bench corner & recycling area
  • clean off the kitchen table
  • spanish lessons

It’s not that much and I REALLY need to get on some bigger projects to get RID of stuff.

Well my unfucking plans or this weekend got a monkey wrench chucked into them, but it turned out to be a good thing, because I was forced to do stuff I would probably have put off for even longer than I already had.

My sister was hanging onto our grandfather’s old liquor cabinet and wanted to bring it over this weekend because it was where they were going to put their Christmas tree. Other people are getting Christmas trees for their houses, I get a liquor cabinet.  Tis the season indeed!

So Saturday I partially unfucked the attic. Then I partially unfucked the dining room. I moved a few pieces up into the attic.  Moved the dog’s cage. Vacuumed like a motherfucker.

I didn’t really have any before pics of that part of the dining room because it wasn’t really a problem area, it just had the dog’s cage & bowls, and there was a bejunked chair that I dejunked and that is what I brought to the attic and covered with an old ET sheet that was left at my last apartment in NJ that I use for a dropcloth.

So I loaded up the liquor cabinet, emptying out a little metal one I’d kept it in. I don’t have the energy tonight but I may move that over to hold the toaster oven and bring the cart the toaster is currently on up to the attic or somewhere.

It’s pretty sad I have so much liquor and no one with whom to drink it. Maybe I’ll have some silly 30-day project where I make a bunch of drinks and post pictures and thoughts. But anyway….

I still have a long way to go in my attic, and in my dining room, and in every other spot in this house, but I am making progress and it feels great!

saturday unfuck check

Weekend of unplanned unfucking:
  • Picked up dog’s meds
  • walked dog
  • unfucked part of attic
  • unfucked part of dining room
  • brought extra furniture from DR to new attic space
  • vacuumed DR rug
  • vacuumed floors and baseboards etc of DR, LR, and kitchen with vac attachments
  • washed dishes and baking stuff from yesterday
  • unfucked utensil/accessory/foil/wrap/bag drawer
  • unfucked flatware holder & drawer (de-mouse-pooped it)
  • cleaned off monkey recliner

tonight I just have to unfuck my bedroom of clothes, I have been really good about rehanging pants and jackets & keeping the floor unfucked all week.

Tomorrow my sister & her hubby are dropping off a liquor cabinet, which is why I unfucked the dining room instead of the living room today. Before they get here I will work on the dining room and living room a bit to save some embarrassment of people entering my messy, cluttered home.  After they leave I will move my booze from the metal cabinet in my kitchen to the ‘new’ cabinet (it was my grandfather’s and he’s been dead since 1973 I think)and filling it with other stuff, and perhaps moving the metal cabinet  to be the stand for the toaster oven, if so, moving stuff into that, and moving the cart the toaster is currently on to wherever. Then perhaps more LR & DR unfucking, but we’ll see.

I intended to spend an hour unfucking my bedroom, putting away clothes piled up all over the place, doing a little dusting and putting up my humidifier.  I ended up spending 2.5 hours and doing a bit more than that. The closed wardrobe holds pajamas and loungey clothes and some extra jeans and t-shirts, and I unfucked that (and ripped up 3 t-shirts for rags, bonus!). I also vacuumed the rugs and the wood floors so maybe I can breathe better at night.  I don’t really like how the books are covering so much of the windows, and I don’t intend to keep it like that but it works for now and all that shit is off the floor.

I didn’t do the top of the wardrobe, obviously, and along the door wall I have another small bookcase I use as a nightstand which also needs to be unfucked but I feel good about how much is done and I’m hoping it helps me to sleep a little better at night. (Of course, if the dog would stop crying in the middle of the night, that would help more.)

Unfucked bedroom: Hooray!

Well, I feel pretty good about my weekend. (as boring as it was, it was good for this old lazy lady)

Yesterday I farted around a lot in the morning, walked the dog, dropped off Dexter Is Delicious at the library, went to the office to write a check for my sister for Flyers tickets she sold the business, and stopped at a diner near there I’d passed by a million times but had never tried, and wolfed down pancakes, eggs, bacon, and a second cup of coffee. Then I picked up my mom and we got pierogies with our Groupons. I got 3 dozen and didn’t pay any extra (the groupon was $12 for $25 worth) and my mom got 6 dozen! She also got the last slice of cheese babka. I have absolutely no idea what I did for the rest of the night.  OH! Duh, it’s still in front of my, partly. I went through this bag of old jewelry and findings and stuff, set aside a bunch of jewelry I would like to sell, and put it on the original cards if I still had them, and cleaned up some of it. I still have a tv table full of little bits and pieces I have to sort and put away.

I keep trying to read my next book selection, My Brilliant Career, by Miles Franklin (a 16 year old Australian girl at the turn of the 20th century) but I can’t seem to concentrate. I think all those Dexter books in the last month have turned my brain to Skittles.

This morning I got up before 8, made coffee, farted around on the internet, and decided I wanted to go whack some tennis balls over at the high school backboard.  So I did that for a half hour, then walked a half mile or so, then I walked the dog. Then I showered, and my mom called and said she didn’t feel like going to brunch, which was good because neither did I, and I don’t know what else I did for a couple hours, oh yeah, made my own breakfast, farted around on the internet, then watched Benny’s Video on Netflix Instant (available through tomorrow), directed by Michael Haneke, who I love. It was disturbing and very good, like most of his films.  He really makes you feel like a voyeur, or at least like it’s unfolding in front of your eyes. There are 2 more available by him through tomorrow: The Castle, and The Seventh Continent. I may watch one of them in a bit.  Then I got off my duff, and went into the attic for a while. MAN do I need to get some serious work done up there.  I think half of it is empty boxes!  Anyway, I got my humidifiers down, and then went through a box and a bag of junk, found some good stuff, including a Speedy Gonzalez Pez dispenser and a vintage postcard I bought on eBay years ago of an Atlantic City hotel that features my family’s name on it but is no relation (and was a corrupt mayor and was renamed in Boardwalk Empire the series), and I threw a bunch of stuff away and put a bunch in recycling. I brought down some clothing tubs, one with winter sweaters and one to put summer shirts into. So I did a little clothes sorting and then I picked up all the heaps of clothing from the floor and clean stuff from the laundry baskets and hung, folded, and put away most of it. There is still a bunch on my bed. And I really want to change my sheets too. So I guess I’d better get on with my evening. The movies are close to 2 hours and then Eastenders comes on at 11, so I have to squeeze in cleaning off the bed and changing my sheets in there.

Next weekend is an Official Decluttering Weekend. Some Wordpress pals and I are going to pick a room, or some sort of decluttering project, take before pics, tackle the project, and then take after pics.  It’s the 1st of 3 weekends in November and December.  So my clothing cleanup doesn’t even count, the attic stuff was like a little bonus, but I hope I am ready to buckle down and really make some headway. On something. I haven’t even decided what to tackle yet. I have a long list but I have to decide.

So, that was my weekend. It was supposed to be a relaxing, do-nothing weekend but I snuck in some exercise and straightening up! Go me!

Well I hope I am done writing checks for house stuff for a while.  My pipes had roots and I got that snaked out, then I asked him to look at the side of my kitchen sink that wouldn’t drain properly and the garbage disposal was fucked up, so the trap/pipe below that was corroded so I just went ahead and got a new pipe and disposal. I’m just thankful I can afford to pay for all this.  New water heater in Feb, the door and steps and chimney/porch repair, and now this. I think the only other thing I may do is ask a neighbor for a price on sealcoating the driveway, and then get those extender thingies for the downspouts. Hopefully I won’t need any other major appliances or repairs for a while.

The plumber who was there in the morning said he has 2 chihuahuas, and the guy who snaked the drains has 3 chihuahuas (and one is knocked up). I guess I picked the right company for all my HVAC and plumbing contracts. chihuahuarama!
