a short list

Or, what I have accomplished this weekend so far:

  • 2 loads of laundry (1 is in the dryer, 1 needs to be folded & put away)
  • organized my CDs (I started 2 or 3 weeks ago…)
  • potted flowers I bought on Mother’s Day
  • went to yoga
  • stripped my bed
  • moved a tub of winter clothes from the hallway to the attic
  • got the box for the humidifier down from the attic
  • brought some more summer t-shirts down from the attic
  • got my dehumidifier working again

Yesterday I felt like crap so I did pretty much nothing except catch up on sleep, watch baseball, watch a movie (Girl, Interrupted, it was better than I had expected) and eat, and walk the dog around 1 block.

I haven’t exactly been tearing it up today. My back felt tight as a drum this morning, and I felt better after yoga this morning but no way was I going to mow the lawn at noon in this heat with my questionable back.  Maybe tomorrow. I hope tomorrow.

I have to put sheets on my bed and find some kind of lightweight blanket because the duvet is too heavy for this time of year and I have my summer weight quilt on the bed in the back bedroom and there is a bunch of crap on top of it. So not only is it inaccessible but it probably should be washed before I put it on my bed. And that is not happening tonight and possibly not tomorrow.

So…I am a bit disappointed in my lack of accomplishment thus far, especially since I have felt really pretty listless and am not expecting to feel a whole lot better tomorrow. We’ll see. Tomorrow is really supposed to be the day I get 4 boxes of donations together. It could happen.

So tonight:

  • put sheets & blanket on bed
  • clean up floor in BR
  • fold towels & put away
  • fold 2nd load of laundry and put away

I can’t believe it’s after 8:30 already.

Done in the kitchen! (well, till I fix dinner)

I started on Saturday and did a lot more than I’d planned on, kind of like what happened last weekend with all my outdoor stuff. They are kind of crappy because not only can you not really see detail but I took my ‘before’ photos after I got started so you see that I already cleared out the corner by the sink, plus in the after photo there is stuff in the sink again, so sue me!

I really don’t feel like typing much and I tend to get too wordy so I’ll let the photos speak for themselves, but I half-assed the table, the end near the toaster oven has accumulated a bunch of crap I don’t feel like dealing with now.

I did a decent job on the floor and I am pretty satisfied with the state of the kitchen for now.  I do need to rearrange my pantry shelves and I also need to clean out my fridge. It’s not terrible but it’s bugging me.

Unfuck You Habitat: Drawer Challenge!

My plastic container drawer was irking me so I got on that.  I still haven’t gotten to my damn kitchen table but this needed to be done.

I had a drawer full of chaos and more that needed to go in there.  (I used to buy those generic 3 pound tubs of vegetable spread and I kept them to store dog food and stuff in.)

and I somehow ended up with a bunch of extra lids. Some I know what they belong to but their containers are missing. How do I have 4 blue lids and NOT ONE container to match? Where did they go? I think they go to the Sock Black Hole. Other lids are recyclables and I’m pretty sure I can just get rid of them. I’ll do a little searching to see if I have random containers scattered around to match and then they will get the heave-ho.

This took me 15 minutes and with the last 5 I washed the few dishes in the sink (and a couple lids).

**unfucked**

(I have some before and in-progress shots of my living room and kitchen, I’ll save those for later. Right now I have to go clean off the damn kitchen table and the counter where those lids are and then I am DONE with the kitchen.)

Okay, other than Saturday when I was very productive getting a lot of outdoor stuff done, I haven’t really done a lot of major unfucking in months and I am barely even maintaining some semblance of clean.

BUT—I did 2 projects a few months back that I think I have maintained pretty well. Like I unfucked it and it has stayed that way more or less.

Let’s see.  Here is a post from January 20th when I unfucked my living room corner and even pulled up the carpet back there. There are before and after photos on there.  The first picture here is the end result.

The second picture I took this morning.

not too bad, huh? Didn’t gather too much crap and it’s still fairly neat.

Here is a post from January 7th when I unfucked my bathroom closet

The 3rd photo is of the shelving on the door after I was done in January.

The 4th one I took this morning (May 14)

The 5th is of the closet in January, and #6 is from this morning.

Not too terribly different.  It makes me feel a little better knowing I’ve been able to keep something unfucked for this long even though the rest of my house is a disaster.  I know that once I actually get rid of stuff and get organized I can keep it organized and the unfucking is much easier to do (I haven’t been this bad all my life because I didn’t always have all this crap).  My problem is that I can’t seem to make a lot of headway getting rid of stuff because a) there is so much and b) I have so much going on.

Holy crap peoples.
I’m tired, and sweaty and probably stinky and I earned this Yuengling like a motherfucker.
After I got back from the bank and hardware store I mowed my lawn (it’s a small yard but I have one of those manual reel mowers and my grass was long). Because it was not as early as I usually do it, it was almost full sun back there. It was in the high 70s today.
After that I brought out my outdoor table and then potted some flowers. Then I washed down the table, brought out the 2 chairs and washed them down.
Then I decided it was time to put the cushions on the front porch furniture for the neighbors’ kitties to enjoy.  So I pulled out the 4 cushions, brushed the dirt and cat hair off of them with a dry scrub brush, then I got a bucket of water & borax and scrubbed the mofos down. Of course as soon as I started the dog walked across the wet one and lay down on on of the dry ones but I hollered at him and he growled and moved. They were filthy, about 8 years of accumulated dirt and cat hair. After I scrubbed them I dumped some clean water on them to rinse and set them out to dry (see photo).
I also put out my 2 lawn flamingos. If you look closely to the photo you will see one by the garage.
Then I went out front to my car and put the new windshield wipers on.
Putting clean(ish) cushions on filthy dirty furniture is kind of dumb so I got my buckets out again and put some simple green in there with some water and scrubbed down a loveseat, 2 chairs, and a table. And the mailbox. AND MY FRONT DOOR. And rinsed it all.  And I swept the porch off too. I kept thinking, my god, you would think the President was stopping by. I wish. My front porch will probably never be this clean again.
Then I walked (scuzzy and all) down to the end of the next street over to the pizza place and got me a 6-pack of Yuengling and a Powerade.
I wrote a short list of stuff I was going to do and I did none of it I don’t think.
Last week I also pulled some weeds and trimmed my tree and cut down some errant trees that are growing in inconvenient places.
So the front of my house is looking decent.
So is the back!
I’m pooped. I’d take a hot bath but a shower is going to have to suffice because I’d have to clean the tub first and that is not happenning today.
I do think I will change my sheets this evening, and I will try to vacuum the downstairs.
Yoga will be much needed tomorrow morning so I better get my ass out of bed early enough to get there because I have Mother’s Day stuff after that to do with my mom & sister.

Unfuck what the neighbors fucked up!!!

Unfuck the honeyfuckle! I mean honeysuckle!

A week ago Tuesday I went into the back yard to find my honeysuckle, which had been growing at the back fence for about 7 years, lying in a heap on the ground. I guess the jerkwad neighbors behind the fence didn’t like it growing on their side and instead of just trimming it back like the law allows, they did whatever it was they did to dismantle it from the fence so that it looked like picture #1.

Now there was another vine, something of the weedier variety that had intermingled with the honeysuckle. I pulled out as much dead stuff as I could along with as much of the weedy vine as I found. Still wrassling with a giant tangle of vines is tedious to say the least but I put on my zen helmet, got my clippers, my staple gun, my wire, and my trellis and went to work. And that resulted in picture #2.  It’s not pretty, and it may or may not work, but I did what I could with what I had (basically, my arms, hands, and the equipment I mentioned).  The mass of collapsed vines had been lying out there for over a week, and picking them up, handling them, trying to untangle them and put them vertical didn’t do them many favors, a lot of the pieces snapped or partially snapped, and I don’t know how they will fare.  But it’s only the beginning of April so I think they should hang in there okay.

After that I raked up all the shit I’d pulled out or cut off, then did a little weeding around my clematis trellis and the flower bed. I get these horrible wild violet (or something) viney creepers that grow like wildfire on the top of the soil and if you leave them too long they root in and choke out your actual plants. So I uncovered my salvia, and a couple other things I’d planted last year.

I don’t remember when I started but I think I was out there for the better part of 2 hours.

It’s Miller Time.

Day 2 of the 20 minute freestyle challenge.  Living room again. It’s getting there!

I included the first before pictures so yesterday’s after pictures became today’s befores. Anyway, #3 and #6 are the afters! (kinda crappy pics because I was in a rush to go to spin class.)

There’s that darn dog again!

I cleaned off some stuff from the sofa, finally got rid of the laundry basket (folded and put away the remaining kitchen towels away) got rid of some stuff on the table, broke down another box, yadda yadda…

Starting to look less embarraskin!

20 minute freestyle challenge B&As

This is embarrassing, my living room is a disgrace.  It’s still a disgrace but it’s a little less of a disgrace now.

Mostly I just broke down boxes, removed the address labels, and put all that junk mail shit into the Big Box Of Recycling (under the rest of the boxes in front of what you may or may not be able to tell is the fireplace.

I tied up the trash bag (it’s now by the front door to go out to the Outside Garbage Can) and replaced the bag, and put away a few things. Also, the boxes by the coffee table magically turned into a sleeping dog!

Twenty minutes.  Not too bad. Now I am going to the movies.

I unfucked my jewelry a little bit! I got this cute purple metal jewelry hanger from Uncommon Goods with a gift certificate my friend gave me. They had a bigger one but I really didn’t see myself hanging all my jewelry up since I have other boxes and a tabletop screen to hang earrings, so I decided on the smaller one to use for my most-worn necklaces especially and then some of my earrings. I have loads more jewelry than this. I was getting tired of looking for my necklaces and storing them in a little dish. This should work pretty well.

April is gonna be a no-shopping month for me

besides groceries and shoes stuff for the dog.

I keep wanting to put exceptions but NO. No exceptions. Exceptions make you weak!

Gonna make sure I get rid of a bunch of stuff too.

You know you’re a homeowner (and old) when stuff like this excites you.

My house was previously owned by a Drunken MacGyver who used to open a case of Bud and do home improvements (this is not even really an exaggeration from what the neighbors say).

They installed a washer and dryer, heating and a/c unit, a hot water heater, added a workbench, and made a little pee closet in the front of the house and then walled it in. (There was a pool table in the larger part of the basement, priorities, people!) The doorway they left measured about 29” across.  And the washer jutted well out into that space. I had to lift the laundry basket higher than the washer to squeeze through there.

It occurred to me last winter when I replaced my hot water heater that it would be a real bitch if I had to replace the washer and/or dryer, especially just the dryer, since the washer would have to be moved in order to get the dryer out of that space.  and the dryer, I should add is about 29” across as well.

I did replace the bilco door that leads outside from the basement and had the stairs redone so any basement appliances would not have to go through the house again, as the hot water heater did. (I live in a twin and everything is narrow, plus I have a lot of shit, it was a tight squeeze).

But anyway.  I had one of our company painters widen the doorway and I think my hideous dungeon of a Blair Witch basement looks like a thing of beauty right about now. I’m not even kidding.  I may actually clean it up a little and realize its potential a little, as a laundry room anyway.

Unfuck Friday so far:

Done:

  • made bed
  • washed breakfast dishes
  • brought all dirty laundry to basement
  • started a load
  • picked up clothes & threw on bed to be sorted later
  • called mom
  • due to rain in weekend forecast, mowed lawn (I have one of those manual reel mowers so it’s a chore, especially when it’s the first of the year and the grass is long and your back is already sore from throwing knees and wrangling out of strangleholds the night before)

So I think the attic will wait for tomorrow.

Gonna finish the laundry and work on my bedroom and then I guess walk the dog then shower and get to the vet.

today’s my friday!

And since I took tomorrow off from work to clean I have to devise a game plan to make the most of it.

  • Up by 9 (hopefully at least a half hour earlier but I’m trying to be realistic here)
  • MAKE BED
  • coffee/breakfast
  • minimal internetting
  • wash breakfast dishes
  • bring laundry to basement
  • throw in a load
  • 1 hour in attic (gotta pick a spot to unfuck)
  • I may have to sort some boxes for donations…
  • finish laundry/PUT AWAY/Put away stuff from *cough* weeks ago
  • unfuck bedroom flat surfaces—bookcase & dresser, including dusting
  • unfuck the rest of the bedroom (shouldn’t be too bad) including swiffering the floor and vacuuming
  • walk dog
  • eat some lunch at some point
  • take breaks throughout
  • shower
  • dog therapy at 5

If there is any extra time in there before 5 (knowing me there won’t be) or after dinner I’ll do 15 minute circuits (15 minutes doing anything productive in a room) depending on how much time and energy I have left, then I will spend the evening vegging in front of the tv or laptop watching movies or tv.

And making a Saturday plan.

Oh I may mow the lawn tomorrow too…But it has to be done one day this weekend.

I am taking Friday off to try to get a handle on some UNFUCKING OF MY HABITAT. To be continued over the weekend.

I can’t stand it anymore.  All the little unfuckings I did over the fall and winter are re-fucked. Maybe not as bad as they had been but it’s still pretty bad, considering all the stuff I never even got to. The only thing I’ve kept in order is the corner where I keep my coats, where I pulled up the rug.  And that’s good, I am proud of myself for that. The kitchen has been manageable too.  Oh and the bathroom. It’s dirty but it’s organized still.  So that is another plus.

I don’t know specifically what I will do on Friday, but over the course of the 3 days I think I will focus on:

  • Cleaning up my bedroom: I neglected the dresser tops last time so it’s high time I tackled that, and I really need to dust. Also, put away a lot of winter sweaters.
  • Clean the bathroom (which is mainly swiffering the floor and giving the sink a good cleaning, and a quick clean of the shower and terlet)
  • Clean the kitchen floor and straighten up
  • Couple loads of laundry—washed, dried, folded, PUT AWAY. Also, put away leftovers from the last 2 weeks or so. :-/ (I’ll do that tonight, actually, since I have no classes)
  • I might do some time in the attic. I might give myself an hour.

I usually do my own thing, but I think this time I’ll try the 20/10 and the 45/15 methods a little more strictly.

I think I will also sort boxes for donations and the next day I take off I will take them to wherever (or else I’ll go on Saturday if I can).

But since I can’t really take a vacation due to The Little Old Dog, I am taking days here and there, many of which will be spent Unfucking My Habitat! (I took one last week for fun, don’t worry)
